Life with Braces

Congratulations! You are on your way to having a stellar and healthy smile! Now that you have braces, there are a few adjustments that you have to make to ensure your treatment advances smoothly.

You should avoid any foods that can damage your appliances including anything crunchy, chewy, hard, or sticky such as:
  • licorice
  • popcorn
  • caramel
  • nuts
The foods you can safely eat include:
  • ice cream
  • soft fruits
  • cooked vegetables
  • lean proteins
  • eggs

If you play sports, you can continue doing so, we just recommend that you approach us to recommend the right mouthguard for you and the sport you play. It is always important to keep up with your oral hygiene routine but when you have braces, this becomes even more important. We recommend brushing your teeth after every meal and flossing (with floss or one of our water picks) at least once a day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to see my family dentist while in braces?

Yes, you should continue seeing your dentist every 6 months for cleanings and checkups.

How much do braces cost? Is financing an option? Does Bohman Orthodontics accept insurance?

Dr. Bohman does not want finances to stand between you and a confident, beautiful smile! We are proud to be an in-network preferred provider for all major PPO plans. We also accept assignments of orthodontic benefits from most insurance plans. Payment plans are also an option with no interest! Should you need to set up a payment plan, we will review this with you during your complimentary consultation.

What age should my child see an orthodontist?

One out of three children needs early orthodontic treatment. The ADA (American Dental Association) recommends seeing an orthodontist at age 7. This helps Dr. Bohman and our team monitor your child’s teeth growth and ensure treatment is started at the right age.

How long will it take to complete treatment?

Treatment time varies for every patient! The length of treatment is determined by the type of treatment and how complex each patient’s case is. Age and the health of your teeth may also determine treatment time.

Is it too late to get orthodontic treatment if I am an adult or have already had braces?

It is never too late to get your dream smile or touch up your smile! 25% of all orthodontic patients are adults. Health, happiness, and confidence are all vitally important in adults and the first step is achieving your dream smile.

What are the benefits to Invisalign?

Invisalign has multiple benefits! First, they are clear aligners so you can smile with confidence knowing your treatment is the most discrete option available. They are also removable, so you can remove them to brush and floss, ensuring a healthy smile during treatment.
